As a social, cultural and philosophical movement, the Enlightment is barely classifiable as a “subject” of a cinematographic work and a space-time conjunction is not enough to make it so. This section is just a collection of films echoing principles and ideas of the so-called Age of Enlightenment. However, there are two particular works which allow us to grasp the Enlightenment school of thought. On one hand, we have The Libertine, released in 2000, in which the character of Diderot makes his appearance and on the other hand A Royal Affair. This last film is set in 1770’s Danish court and narrates the story of Johann Friedrich Strueensee, the king’s personal physician and a strong supporter of Enlightment ideas.
