Defining the cyberpunk genre is not easy at all since it inspires many different interpretations: it includes the Internet and virtual reality, human and machine hybrids, cyborgs, clones, cities, technocracy, paranoia, synthetic drugs and other elements too. Some observers have summarised the concept in the expression “high-tech and low life” to indicate a future world where progress results in a deterioration of quality of life, where control and mental manipulation leads to a drastic reduction of individual freedom.
Movies with an average relevance grade feature just a few of the aforementioned elements (“Inception”, “Brazil”...), whereas three dots indicate movies, like “The Matrix” or “Blade Runner”, rich in cyberpunk characteristics; although for purists “Johnny Mnemonic” is the only film which should be listed.
